Parent & Child Bullying Prevention

A chance for parents and their kids to get clear about bullying at the school-level, how to handle it when (not if) your child sees it happen, how to report it to teachers and administrators and what parents can do (and what they shouldn’t do). We’ve all seen the headlines and the outcome isn’t good—no child should have to contend with bullying at school, but statistics show that even at the Kindergarten level, bullying can affect school performance and self-esteem and establishes a behavior pattern that is very hard to break at a later age. Though the workshop deals with a serious issue, our goal is to present info in a fun way through interactive exercises rather than lecture and make sure parents and kids have a basis for future discussion on the topic.
The Safe School Climate Act was approved in June 2006 in SC, and though many upstate schools take part in SCCT’s Know Way Bullying Prevention by bringing our program (which costs just $150) to their 3rd-4th or 6th grade classes, many parents want to be included in the information too. This workshop will help parents AND students • understand what exactly bullying is • how anyone can be a target of a bully (time-honored stereotypes do not apply) • how to report it • how just watching a bully situation is also contributing to bullying • what cyber-bullying is • how demanding an apology from the bully to the target is one of the worst things a parent can do
Using interactive theatre exercises, kids can practice dealing with a bully in a safe environment so they are better prepared to deal with one at school whether they are just observing a bullying situation or are the actual target of bullying. We will also have a school counselor/administrator present so parents can ask specific questions about how best to communicate at their school and what school policies are.
A FEW STATISTICS • Approximately 30% of all children & youth in grades 6-10 have been bullied or bully other children at one time within a semester. • Ten to fifteen percent of all children report being bullied on a regular basis. • 160,000 children miss school everyday for fear of being bullied. (National Association of School Psychologists, Vail 1999) • Biggest fear cited from Harris poll of over 2,000 girls ages 8-17 was fear of being teased.
Class enrollment- 10 pairs maximum, 5 pairs Class maximum = 10 pairs Cost is $40 for a parent/child pair ($10 for an addition person within the family = other parent, additional child, grandparent, etc).
