Q. My child has done a lot of theatre with school & other programs, but this is our first SCCT class, can we register for upper level classes?
A
. Consideration for placement in upper level classes is solely at the teacher’s discretion. The student may be required to take a test to establish their working knowledge as well as perform a monologue and go through an interview. Advanced level classes tend to be too analytical for all but very focused students. Earlier SCCT classes build the vocabulary and work process expected to be ingrained in upper level students.

Q. Who teaches the SCCT Theatre Arts Conservatory classes?
A.
All of our instructors are theatre professionals experienced working on stage as performers, back stage in varied technical theatre positions, and years of experience working specifically with youth. For more information on SCCT Faculty please visit our Faculty page.

Q. What types of classes do you offer?
A. The format includes Intensive Training, Production and Process Classes, and Workshops. Each format offers unique games, activities and challenges for the theatre student.

Q. What ages does SCCT teach and do you strictly adhere to age policy for classes?
A. We make every effort to adhere to the age policy for classes. The exception would be a returning student for the same teacher and the specific ages enrolled in the class in question. Each teacher can best assess the needs of the individual student.

Q. How many children are in a class?
A. Class enrollment minimums and maximums are specific to the type of class. Please see the information provided in each class description.

Q. Can I observe my child in class?
A. Most teachers will gladly let you observe a class when asked in advance. Often times, a parent’s presence can inhibit a child’s performance. Small children, telephones, pets, etc. are very distracting to all the students and every effort should be made to limit distractions when inside the building. We also are very happy to have parents volunteer during this time check with Michelle Ward to make arrangements.

Q. When are your classes?
A.
Our classes run year round, with a Fall and Spring semester and Summer Camp courses.

Q. How long do classes run?
A. A typical session is 10 weeks for Exploration and Process classes and 12 weeks for Production and upper level classes.

Q. Will taking classes help my child get cast in one of your plays?
A.
Yes and no. Enrollment in no way guarantees casting, but honing acting skills through classes certainly helps children prepare for the expectations of auditions and the demands of rehearsals.

Q. Will there be a performance at the end of the class?
A. All classes end in some kind of informal “sharing” for the parents (unless otherwise specified). Depending on the type of class, some sharings may present a rehearsed performance and some may be a sample class. Most Exploration and Process classes actually include two mini-sharings over the course of the session. The first occurs mid-way through the session and helps prepare the students for an audience and the final (more extensive) sharing occurs in the final class.

Q. Does my child need experience to take classes?
A. No. We have classes for beginners at every age as well as classes for those with experience.

A. Contrary to popular belief, you are not required to take SCCT classes in order to audition or be cast in a production. We do however encourage participating theatre arts’ training. It like any other form of training takes practice to hone the craft - the more you do it, the better you get, the more likely you are to succeed in your goal.

Q. What do I wear to auditions?
A. Always dress neatly and comfortably for auditions. Typically the Audition Call will offer further instructions based on the type of production. Q. How do I know if I am cast for a SCCT production after an audition?
A. The Cast List will be posted both on the front door of SCCT Headquarters and online under the production’s page. The date and time will be specified on the Audition Notes handout you received at auditions.
